Welcome to the VHBPA web site

The Virginia Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (VHBPA) is a non-profit membership organization that represents thoroughbred owners and trainers who race at Colonial Downs. The VHBPA negotiates with the management and ownership of Colonial for race days, dates, and purses, and also provides educational, recreational, health, counseling, and religious programs for back stretch workers.

There was no racing this summer at Colonial Downs because of a contract dispute between the VHBPA and Colonial Downs. The track wanted to race 6 days over 2 weeks. The VHBPA wanted 24 days over 8 weeks.

THERE WILL BE A HORSEMEN'S MEETING, OCTOBER 8TH, AT 6:30 P.M., AT THE SUMMER HOUSE ON THE GROUNDS AT GREAT MEADOW IN THE PLAINS, VA TO DISCUSS THE DISPUTE WITH COLONIAL AND THE FUTURE OF RACING IN VIRGINIA. ALL HORSEMEN ARE INVITED. FREE REFRESHMENTS.

We have scheduled three flat races at the International Gold Cup steeplechase meet on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at the Great Meadow Course in The Plains, Virginia. All three carry purses of $25,000 and range in distance from 7 furlongs to 1 1/4 mile. For the conditions please click here. Entry fees and NSA licensing are waived but horsemen must be licensed by the Virginia Racing Commission because there is pari-mutuel wagering on the races.
