Welcome to the VHBPA web site

The Virginia Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (VHBPA) is a non-profit membership organization that represents thoroughbred owners and trainers who race in Virginia. The VHBPA negotiates with track management for race days, dates, and purses, and also provides educational, recreational, health, counseling, and religious programs for back stretch workers.

On October 31, 2014 Colonial Downs turned in its license to operate its race track. To keep racing alive in Virginia the VHBPA, the VHHA (harness horsemen), the VTA (breeders), and the Virginia Gold Cup (steeplechasing) established a non-profit organization, the Virginia Equine Alliance, to possibly lease Colonial Downs and find other racing sites. To do that our state Racing Act has to be amended during this year's January and February meeting of the General Assembly.
