The Virginia Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (VHBPA) is a non-profit membership organization that represents thoroughbred owners and trainers who race at Colonial Downs. The VHBPA negotiates with the management and ownership of Colonial for race days, dates, and purses, and also provides educational, recreational, health, counseling, and religious programs for back stretch workers.

  RACING IN 2010 WILL START ON SATURDAY, MAY 29TH AND RUN FOR 40 DAYS THROUGH WEDNESDAY, JULY 17TH. RACES ARE ON EACH DAY EXCEPT THURSDAYS AND FRIDAYS. THE STABLE AREA WILL OPEN ON MAY 17TH.

The next  Board meeting is Tuesday, July 27th at 1:45 p.m. in the VHBPA Warrenton office.


Virginia Racing Commission Meeting:
The next meeting of  the VRC is Tuesday, July 20th at 9:30 A.M. in the VHBPA building at Colonial Downs.


Message Board:    

GROOM TRAINING: The VHBPA will sponsor a 6 week groom training program--Groom Elite 101-- at Colonial Downs. It starts on Thursday, June 10th, in the VHBPA building. The course is three hours each Thursday and Friday (Noon to 3 p.m.). It is a combination of class room instruction and hands on training in the stable area. The course is free and is taught in English and Spanish. Call Frank Petramalo if interested, 703-999-7491 or 804-966-1234.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Grants from a $10,000 fund will be awarded in September by the VHBPA for use in college, vocational school, or other formal course of study. Applicants must be: (1) Virginia resident; and, (2) race track or horse farm employee or a child of the same. Applications are due by August 15, 2010.
